10 LESSONS I LEARNED FROM ELDAD AND MEDAD

I believe as you soberly study these lessons God will renew your spirit, soul, and body.

TEXT: (Numbers 11:24-27).
And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.  And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.  And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.

- Eldad and Medad are Hebrew names that derive from the root ydd, meaning "to love." Eldad, then, denotes "God is beloved" or "El is beloved," while Medad denotes "object of affection."

- A small amount of disagreement existed among theologians as to the true origin of their names. While some claim that the name is Assyrian in origin, some believe it is Amonites. However, the names' exact origin are less important than the fact that they represent two of the elders that Moses chose to assist him in leading the people even though they were not present when he and other I sraelite elders met with God in the Tabernacle but were later found to have prophesied while in the camp.

- God instructed Moses to select 70 elders to help him carry the load of leading the Israelites when he felt too overburdened. In order for these elders to be able to prophesy, God also promised to grant them a portion of the spirit that was on Moses.

1) God Is Not Constrained By The Realms Of Space, Time, Or Intellect That Belong To Us; (Study Galatians 5:16-26). Eldad and Medad prophesied throughout the camp, showing that even though they were not present when the Lord appeared to Moses and the Israelite elders in the Tabernacle to speak with them, they were nevertheless able to experience the same occurrence.

2) Our Presence Can Be Contacted Through Our Names; (Acts 19:13-15). It is encouraged to encrypt our names and protect them from all evil through prayers. It is understandable why our Lord Jesus counseled us to pray for deliverance from all evil.

3) Eldad And Medad Were Not Among The Notable Elders; (1 Corinthians 1:27). But when their names was presented to the Lord, the Holy Spirit broke the law of distance and went in pursuit of them, filling them so that they started to prophesy.

4) No Matter Where They May Be, God Hears Our Prayers And Protects The People We Ask Him To. All that was needed was for the names of Eldad and Medad to be offered to the Lord. This proves that prayer has the power to transform our nation, save the most egregious sinners, and turn around wayward children. Simply present their names to the Lord in prayer.

5) We Are Not To Mistrust Or Envious Of People Who Have Been Given The Gift Of The Spirit; (Study James 3:16-18). We should recognize others' gifts and be open to what we could learn from them rather than feeling envious of people who are more gifted than us. Despite the fact that Moses was a renowned man of God, Joshua's plea was addressed by him in a gentle and careful manner. Alternatively, Joshua was envious and tried to stop Eldad and Medad when he heard them prophesying in the camp. A prophet's calling is to prophesy. Does today's prophet actually prophesying?

6) God's Gift Extends To Everyone, Not Just To Ourselves; Despite the fact that these men were farmers, God chose to appear to them in the camp rather than at their farms. This shows that we shouldn't be afraid to open up to God when He says yes. That was the driving force behind Eldad and Medad.

7) Being Used By God Is A Possibility; (Study 2 Timothy 2:20-21). In the eyes of our God, age, marital position, and social standing are not criteria for how much He can use us.

8) Those Who God Has Not Condemned Should Not Be Condemned By Us; Eldad and Medad would have been imprisoned under human rules for submitting their names to the Lord and declining to to be present at the Tabernacle. But our kind God didn't think of that. He extended the same compassionate hand to those in the camp as he did to those in the tent tabernacle. In actuality, God is a loving God!

9) Even If It Involves Making A Decision That Is Unpopular Or Uncomfortable, Obey God's Spirit. Despite the fact that Eldad and Medad's encounter was unexpected, it nonetheless occurs in an incredible manner.

10) We Should Use Our Position And Power As Leaders—in Whatever Capacity—to Develop And Raise More Leaders. Mose desires that all of God's people were prophets like he was. An example for all of us, really.

What is anything that is still extremely hard to come by today? The answer is 'leaders who are driving change.' How many of today's esteemed church leaders can behave like Moses? If it were today, Eldad and Medad would be in jail for turning down Moses' request to meet with God. That seems like fighting for God.

We still have a lot to learn about God, we still don't fully know God Enough; hence it will need humility to do so. (Study 1 Corinthians 13:12).

And this ought to compel us to be open to the notion that God might make surprising choices. Eldad and Medad's prophecy caught everyone off guard. An unmistakable sign of God's presence, never before felt by anybody. I sincerely pray that these lessons inspired you and helped you grow in your understanding of and relationship with God in Jesus Name, Amen.
